The bookmark predates the printed book. Monks used them to mark handwritten manuscripts.
Experience flow
Pick Your Design Direction
You sit down at your station and look through the design references before touching the brush. The instructor walks you through the techniques available so you know what is achievable before you start.
First Stroke
You pick up the brush and make the first mark. The bookmark responds immediately to colour, and within a few minutes a direction starts to emerge. Most people find the first few strokes the most surprising part.
Build the Pattern
You work through the design layer by layer: background, pattern, detail. The instructor is nearby if something is not going the way you want it, but most of the session is yours to work through.
Final Details
The last stretch is for the fine details: outlines, accents, anything that makes the piece feel finished. You step back and look at what you made.
Take It Home
The session ends with your bookmark in hand. It is painted by you, designed by you, and goes straight into the book you are currently reading.
Total Duration: 1 hr - 1 hr 15 mins
Paint absorbs into paper fibres. That is why hand-painted pieces look richer than anything printed.
